Sprays

In general, the human body allows the drugs and active substances from dietary supplements to reach their destination - the place of action. There are shorter and faster pathways, but also pathways that are more lengthy and significantly slower. In addition, on the way to their destination, active substances may be subjected to adverse influences that may lead to their modification or degradation.

In order to act, the active substances must enter the bloodstream and be transported to the desired location by the cardiovascular system. The fastest route is to administer them directly into the cardiovascular system by intravenous injection or intravenous infusion. However, this is not practically possible in the case of daily application of nutritional supplements.

The simplest way is to take the nutritional supplements orally, i.e. by mouth. In this way, various tablets, dragees, capsules, solutions, drops, suspensions, emulsions, syrups or healthy drinks can be administered or taken.This form of taking and using nutritional supplements is very simple and, above all, very pleasant for everyone. The disadvantage is that the medicine can only enter the bloodstream after it has passed through the digestive tract to the liver, where it actually enters the blood via the portal vein. The passage of the drug through the gastrointestinal tract and the liver may lead to less or more conversion (metabolisation) of the active doses and therefore to a reduction in the efficacy or even to degradation and inactivation of the active substance. In much the same way (via the portal vein), a drug administered rectally (via the rectum) enters the blood.

For rapid and guaranteed application of the active substance, a transdermal therapeutic system is used, where the drug is administered through the skin. In this case, the active substance is administered in the form of a patch, cream, gel or spray, penetrates the skin and enters the bloodstream directly. For example, anti-nicotine preparations to help with smoking cessation, or patches or creams and gels for pain are also administered in this way.

The application of a spray form of active substances to the skin is one of the alternatives that is becoming and will become increasingly preferable to taking tablets or injecting them. When sprays are applied to the wrist or topically to the affected area, the active substances are absorbed transdermally into the bloodstream. This avoids exposure of the active substances to the environment in the mouth, or in the stomach or other parts of the digestive tract, and thus the risk of modification or degradation of the active substances. The skin provides a large surface area suitable for absorption. Absorption has been shown to be much faster in this case than when taken in tablet or capsule form.
